Granite, being rock is heat-proof. It is also stain-proof to most household chemicals and compounds. Dropping a cast iron pan is the most likely way to crack a granite counter. However, there are reliable websites that say granite needs maintenance to continue looking its best. These contradicting statements may be due to the fact that stone dealers include non-granites in their lineup, because these other stones exhibit similar properties. I don't know exactly.
